The other day I decided to go to the beach to clear my mind and begin working on one of my projects. I spent a good 30mins listening to music and staring out at the water just admiring the peace and beauty of creation. Ok, and laughing at some of the foolish things people do on the shore. Comic relief is great for the soul. I was in an even better space than hours prior and expected nothing more from the interaction between the beach and I. But then I saw them, gangsta pelicans fighting over something in the water… Pelicans freak me out. Why are they so huge? I usually keep my distance because I don’t trust them so of course them acting up on the water grabbed my attention. A few seconds later I saw three awesome dolphins jumping through the water having what seemed like the greatest time ever. I cannot describe the excitement that I felt on the inside! As many times as I have been to the beach or been on boats I have never seen dolphins up close in their natural environment. For me the three dolphins represented freedom and served as a reminder that when I am able to look past my situations and admire the blessings I have already acquired, I will be able to catch glimpses of rare beauty that not everyone is privy to. I looked around at the other beach goers but no one was seeing what I saw. Well with the exception of a young man out on his kayak who did a hilarious initial check to make sure he wasn’t dealing with sharks. Everyone else was taking naps, pictures of themselves, or caught up in conversation. I even tried to get peoples attention but no one seemed to want to hear me. *Shrug*
By the time people noticed and ran down to snap video/pictures the dolphins weren’t showing themselves anymore. But sea lions came and made a visit and were willing to do all kinds of tricks. No offense to sea lions but honestly, they were not as exciting as dolphins and the people made that apparent by how disappointed they were when walking away. Very shortly after, people were back in their own worlds. Tanning and iPhone photo shoots resumed and some people left the area all together. Only a select few continued to watch the water with expectation of the dolphins return. As we continued to watch the sea lions play and float into the distance here come the dolphins once again with such beauty and synchronized precision. This time they stayed around for about 15mins playing and showing off all their abilities. Do you know that half the people that ran to witness it the first time and missed them no longer cared, shrugged their shoulders and went back to what they were doing? They missed a blessing that was flaunting itself in front of them. Something they reported wanting to see so badly changed in a matter of minutes. The rest of us enjoyed their show and watched them until they swam into the distance. There was so much that I got out of the dolphin sightings on Friday so over the next 7 days I will share one lesson I learned per day, starting today... Day One: The Spirit of Expectancy When you have a spirit of expectancy it gives God the ability to go beyond what you expected! I expected for the beach to aid in my grounding and balance. I did not expect to see those dolphins and for them to provide me with the revelation I got, which goes far beyond what I can or will explain on this post. So you are probably going to need a better example. In Acts chapter 3 we learn about a lame beggar who was carried into the city daily and placed next to the temple gate which was called Beautiful. Just to be clear, in this context lame means crippled or physically disabled. He expected to sit at the gate, ask for money, and receive it from anyone willing to give it. He saw Peter and John and asked them for some money as they were on their way into the temple. The scripture says that the lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money (Acts 3:5 NLT). In this case the man’s spirit of expectancy led to an even greater gift. Peter responded saying that he did not have any money for him but would give him what he had. Peter used the authority given to him through the name of Jesus Christ to heal the man. The results? The bible sums it up just fine in Acts 3:7-11: Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them. All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon’s Colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John. Your expectancy can lead to great things: healing, improvement, elevation, promotion etc! So my message for you is to stop expecting the worst because that is what you will attract! Know that no matter how low you feel or think your circumstance is there is better. Expect the great and watch God work out greater for you simultaneously using you as a testimony to astound others! Open your eyes to life and expect the great!!!!!!!!!! Check back in on the daily devotion section to get the other 6, which include: Day two: Finding the privilege in your low moments Day three: You’re too caught up in you Day four: Let the sea lions teach you a lesson Day five: Motives.
